1.Background

Education for International Understanding (EIU) is an international education activity initiated and advocated by UNESCO. Since its inception, EIU has upheld the philosophies of Understanding, Peace and Living Together, and carried out the missions of facilitating cultural understanding, reducing conflict, promoting peaceful and prosperous co-existence through education, and reaching global consensus.

In 2015, The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development issued at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development and Education 2030 Framework for Action proposed by UNESCO both showed strong support for the education for sustainable development and global citizenship.

In December 2017, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) officially released the PISA 2018 “Global Competence" assessment framework at Harvard University.

China has always been very active in promoting global education governance. The Outline of the national program for medium and long term educational reform and development (2010-2020) issued by the State Council and the Education 2030 Framework for Action by China’s Ministry of Education both underline the importance for EIU in China. In 2015, MOE identified pilot cities for EIU; and in 2016, MOE included EIU into “Core Competence for Chinese Students” and highlighted its importance in social involvement.

In the era of globalization, communication and inter-dependence have shaped the human society into a community with a shared future. A more complex, diverse and dynamic world now puts forward higher standard for talents, therefore EIU has become a pressing need instead of a forward-looking concept.

To respond to the call of the times, Beijing Royal Charity Foundation joined hands with UNESCO in initiating the “Future Diplomat” Youth Education for International Understanding in December 2017.

This program is China’s first charity program which themes the Education for International Understanding
